At EURO 2024, UEFA has established specific rules and procedures to ensure the tournament is conducted fairly and orderly. These rules are designed to maintain fairness throughout the competition and to handle disputes swiftly and efficiently, keeping the focus on the football on the field.
If a player or team official is sent off (with a red card), they are automatically suspended for the next match. For more severe offenses, UEFA can increase the punishment and extend it to other competitions.
Yellow cards have their own rules:
- In the qualification phase: a suspension is triggered after three yellow cards, and then again after the fifth and any subsequent yellow card.
- In the final tournament: a suspension is triggered after two yellow cards, and then again after the fourth yellow card.
Importantly, yellow cards that do not result in a suspension do not carry over to the next stages of the competition. For example, yellow cards from the qualification phase are not carried over to the play-offs or the final tournament. Additionally, in the final tournament, yellow cards expire after the quarter-finals, allowing players to start the semi-finals with a clean slate.
